You’ve got questions and comments that you submit to the Browns’ official Facebook and Twitter pages. Here’s what I have to say about what you have to say:
Joe – Since Brandon Weeden can’t make any plays with his legs, do you ever see him having elite accuracy, decision-making, and pocket presence?
I do, Joe.
First, I think Weeden has enough talent to develop into a consistently good quarterback. I don’t think it’s a reach to say he could become significantly better than that.
But Weeden must receive the proper coaching and guidance to get there, and I have no doubt that new Browns coach Rob Chudzinski and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Norv Turner will provide exactly that.
Chudzinski and Turner will address every phase of Weeden’s game. They will take it apart, piece by piece, and put it back to together.
Weeden’s accuracy can be greatly helped by numerous coaching points that address his mechanics, from the positioning of his shoulders to his footwork … and everything in between. Chudzinski and Turner will teach Weeden all of the nuances about how to make his delivery more efficient and much faster.
They will drill him on how to make better decisions with the ball, showing him not only what he shouldn’t do but also what he should do. And Chudzinski and Turner should be able to help Weeden enhance his pocket presence, which, like his overall game, was far from a train wreck. I think there is plenty with which to work here.
Why do I have the faith in Chudzinski and Turner to help Weeden – or any quarterback – improve? Because they’ve done it multiple times. Chudzinski’s most recent successful project is Carolina’s Cam Newton. For Turner, you have a Pro Football Hall of Famer in Troy Aikman and a prolific passer in San Diego named Philip Rivers, just to name a couple.
As for Weeden’s lack of mobility, he told me after the season that that would be an area of focus during his offseason workouts. It will be interesting to see the sort of progress he makes when it comes to his efforts to try and become more mobile.
