You’ve got questions and comments that you submit to the Browns’ official Facebook and Twitter pages. Here’s what I have to say about what you have to say:
William – I let the Super Bowl digest and waited to make this assessment: The Browns need to get a lot better to compete at that level. Comments?
I agree that the Browns need to greatly improve to go from a 5-11 record to a Super Bowl team, William. That much is fairly obvious.
However, I think your assessment is a little oversimplified. The issue isn’t just about getting “a lot better.” It’s where the Browns make those strides.
And the No. 1 spot is quarterback.
If the Super Bowl gave us anything, it was a clear reminder of the critical importance of having a dynamic, difference-maker under center.
If the Browns are going to compete at the level of a Super Bowl contender, they need their version of Joe Flacco (even if, with Brandon Weeden, they were highly competitive with the Ravens last season) and Colin Kaepernick. And if they can find that top-flight talent and the most important position on the team (or continue to develop one in Weeden), they will take a giant leap forward.
That’s because other key parts are in place, including big ones at running back (Trent Richardson) and wide receiver (Josh Gordon). The offensive line is in good shape. Help is needed primarily on defense, although the Browns certainly would benefit from the additions of a wide receiver (or two) and a tight end.
